You and your lifestyle

At Earaid, we want to understand what truly matters in your life and how hearing may be affecting it. We’ll talk about your work, home environment, hobbies and interests, helping us gain a complete picture of your needs for the best possible care.

Medical history

We’ll also review your medical history by asking about any relevant conditions or symptoms, such as tinnitus or past ear infections. This allows our audiologists to identify any underlying health issues that may be affecting your hearing.

Otoscopy

The next step at Earaid is an ear examination using an otoscope. A simple tool that allows us to look inside your ear. We’ll check that everything is healthy and clear, ensuring there are no blockages, inflammation or wax build-up that could affect your hearing.

Pure tone audiometry

At Earaid, the pure tone audiometry test is vital for checking your hearing. Simply Wearing headphones, you’ll listen to tones at different pitches and volumes.

Speech test

We use a speech-in-noise test to recreate everyday situations like cafés or restaurants where background sounds can make listening difficult. Using headphones and recorded voices, we measure how well you hear speech with noise present. We also carry out a speech-in-quiet test to check your speech recognition without background distractions.

How long does a hearing test take?

A full hearing assessment at Earaid takes around 60–75 minutes. Once complete, you’ll receive a clear breakdown of your results. Our audiologist will then guide you through the next steps, including whether hearing aids or further treatment may be helpful.

What happens if hearing loss is found?

The Earaid Audiologist will talk you through the wide range of hearing aids we have or if it’s a simple case of removing wax to enhance your hearing

Free Hearing Test FAQ's

A hearing test is a simple assessment that measures how well different sounds and tones can be heard. It helps identify any hearing loss and determines the best solution for improving hearing clarity.

Regular hearing tests help detect early signs of hearing loss, monitor changes over time and ensure hearing aids or other treatments are working effectively. Early detection allows for better management and improved quality of life.

Adults should have their hearing tested every two years, or sooner if any changes in hearing are noticed. Those exposed to loud environments or already using hearing aids may benefit from more frequent checks.

Ear Aid provides two convenient options:

  • Clinic Hearing Test: Conducted in a professional environment using advanced diagnostic equipment.
  • Home Hearing Test: A full hearing assessment carried out in the comfort of home, ideal for those with mobility issues or busy schedules.

At the clinic, an Audiologist performs a detailed ear examination followed by a series of sound and speech tests. The results are displayed on an audiogram, showing hearing levels across different frequencies. Recommendations are then made based on the results.

A qualified Audiologist visits the home with portable testing equipment. The process is similar to a clinic test, including ear check, hearing test and a full results review. The home test provides the same accuracy and professional care as an in clinic appointment.

Most hearing tests take up to 60 minutes, depending on the type of test and outcome of results

  • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
  • Turning up the TV or radio volume
  • Difficulty following conversations in noisy places
  • Feeling that people are mumbling
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)

Yes. Hearing tests can identify different types and degrees of hearing loss, including conductive, sensorineural and mixed hearing loss. The Audiologist will explain the results and recommend suitable next steps.

After the test, results are reviewed in detail. If hearing loss is detected, the Audiologist will discuss suitable options such as hearing aids, earwax removal or further medical evaluation if needed.

Ear Aid offers free hearing tests for adults in our Birmingham Clinic. Home visits include a call-out fee depending on location.

Appointments can be booked online or by phone. Choose between a clinic visit or a home hearing test for convenience.
